9. Acids and Bases - 2
Purposes of the experiment and cursory overview of experimental method(southward)
The purpose of this lab was to further explore the basic concepts of acids and bases through 2
titrations. In Part A, a weak triprotic acid, histidine, was titrated with NaOH, a potent base of operations.
Phenolphthalein and bromocresol greenish were used equally indicators to decide the endpoints of the
titration. The titration bend was plotted, and the iii equivalence so the half-equivalence
points were calculated using the idea of maximum outset derivative (rate of pH increase). The
corresponding pH's were observed to determine the One thousanda values for each protonated form of
histidine. The Henderson-Hasselbach equation at the half-equivalence point, pH=pKa, was used
for this purpose. In Function B, the weak base ammonia was titrated with the strong acrid HCl. The
indicator thymolphthalein was used to decide the endpoint of this titration. Only i
equivalence point was observed, since ammonia is a monoprotic weak base. The Ka value of
ammonium was adamant using the half equivalence point of this titration using pH=pKa at the
half equivalence point method. However, the since this was a weak base titration, the Kb value
for ammonia likewise calculated using Chiliadw = Ka 10 Mb. The pH of both titrations was monitored using a
pH electrode that was calibrated using a buffer with pH=7 and one with pH=5.
